Naggar Castle in Kullu Valley

The ancient Castle in Naggar has mesmerising and breath taking views of the surrounding mountain ranges in the valley of Kullu. Settled amidst the sights of River Beas, villages on the river bank, dense cedar woodlands and the snow covered Rohtang Pass, this medieval castle was constructed by Raja Sidh Singh of Kullu in around 1460 AD and it had been the seat of the Kullu Rajas for many years. It was converted into a rest house a hundred years back.

The Naggar Castle

However, in the year 1978, this building was taken over by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism District Corporation and was converted into a hotel in 1978 when the last Raja fell onto financial crises. It is now run and operated as a heritage hotel. The historical legacy of the village is reflected by the castle as this beautiful fort is a fine example of the amalgamation of the western and Himalayan styles of architecture with its alternating pattern of stone and timber.

The Naggar Castle boasts of stupendous architectural features. Fireplaces, fitting staircases and magnificent stone and wood works grace the castle's interiors. There are three small shrines within the premises of the castle, each of which holds immense religious importance. The Naggar Castle also has incredible art pieces on display which are a delight for art lovers. It also houses the wooden Jagatipatt Temple in its complex and is home to the Roerich Art Gallery as well which exhibits paintings of the Russian artist, Nicholas Roerich. The gallery has preserved original creations of the Himalayas done by Roerich, his quotations and notes left by his visitors. Visitors can also take traditional items like wall hangings, coasters and artefacts bearing imprints of Roerich's paintings as souvenirs.
